BJJ Training Portland: What to Do When You Feel Like You’ve Hit A Wall
Bjj Training Portland:
This is a blog that is exclusively for people who are frustrated in their Martial Arts Journey
It’s intended to be a word of encouragement for people who are giving it their all and still feel like they are stalled out in their journey to become a better martial artist.
Maybe they are smaller than everyone in their class and they are still getting smashed on.
Maybe it’s been years and they feel like they are only going at a snail’s pace.
Maybe they are the odd ball out and they feel like no one can relate to what they are going through.
Training and Dedication will always be rewarded.
It’s often that we are much harder on ourselves than is really warranted. It’s not up to us entirely to gauge our own progress. Objectively, we are all going to be skewed in our own self perception and biases. Our coaches are there to provide feedback to us and to encourage us to grow. It might be that you are being too hard on yourself.
Cross Train With A Different Art For Perspective.
I studied this really intense Qi Gong that took like an hour and a half to do and was super super difficult to do. The conditioning helped my mind, a side of Tai Chi also helped my balance and reflexes. I was really into it and I got absolutely demolished when I started trying Jiu Jitsu and Kickboxing. However, after I started training these arts, whatever I learned (and had not discarded) really kicked in and made me a more well rounded martial artist. BJJ Training Portland
Find Out Your Learning Style and Implement Changes
I thought that learning styles were bullshit until I landed myself in an organic chemistry class. I was like I do not know what this old dude is talking about. I figured that I just had to learn by watching youtube videos on 2x speed. Other classmates had to fuck with stick and ball models. I was like whatever I can’t do that it’s not helpful at all. MY POINT IS …. maybe watching videos before you come to class will help you. Maybe It’s more about rolling with someone and then drilling it repetitively. Only you are going to be able to know what works for you to optimize your learning.BJJ Training Portland
Get Mauled. Repeat.
Yes, getting pressure cooked (preferably with someone who will guide you through the experience and there can be some dialogue while you are getting mashed) is a great way to learn. Its’ not sufficient to sit on the sidelines and not spar. You’re not going to get better that way. Sometimes the best lessons are the most difficult ones to learn.
DO NOT GIVE UP
Whatever you do, don’t give up. Your martial arts in the backbone of a healthy life and will help you through the difficult times in life. It takes time and dedication to get to the other side of our goals. You will get better. It just so happens that most people give up right before major breakthroughs in their art or life. Trust me, it’s much better to stick through it and then on the back end you”ll see that you were getting better all along.
What’s stopping you? Let’s do this!
