Hi guys, today we’re writing a blog from your favorite Jiu Jitsu Portland Gym: Mata Leao Combat Sports.
Get To The Next Level in Jiu Jitsu Portland
This could be a really really short blog: Train a lot! Jiu Jitsu Portland
Yes, we have all heard (and felt) that drillers ARE killers. But here’s some other things that you can do on and off the mat to get better at Jiu Jitsu!
1. Keep a journal – Writing about Jiu Jitsu after rolling can help you contemplate your BJJ game in a way that sinks in subconsciously. The power of the pen can help you remember transitions, escapes and more.
2. Watch instructionals – Disclaimer: not every video on youtube is going to be legit… but there are a lot of resources that are absolutely helpful by offering tips and ideas which can help you evolve your game.
3. Study competition footage – Competitions are much different from casual rolls with your buddies on the mats after-all. Competitions are more intense, more adversarial, and there’s more adrenaline. Watching these types of matches are helpful in that it gives you perspective on what other belts like you do and experience when it comes time to go hard.
4. Find a BJJ role model – Jiu Jitsu Portland Gyms have plenty of good Jiu Jiu Jitsu Trainers, but at Mata Leao we have the friendliest and most knowledgeable coaches around, but most definitely in SE Portland. It would also help if your upper belt mentors could impart some philosophical wisdom too on how they’ve progressed throughout their journey.
5. Compete in a tournament – Competing will teach you something about yourself every time. They also serve as great benchmarks for your growth and are equally tough and wonderful. Competing gives you a clear mirror image for where you are in your journey.
6. Make A List – There are plenty of moves to learn and drill. Organization is critical if you are to reach your goals. Do some research and find out moves that you want to get better at executing and implement those changes in a structured way with your rolling buds.
7. Do extra conditioning – It’s never a bad idea to do yoga before or after a session. Jiu Jitsu can be brutal on the body and stretching is good for flexibility, mobility, injury prevention, and stress management. Also, lifting weights and getting cardio in (jump rope lately?) is also a very smart move.
8. Team up with a good training partner – We live to train, and we can’t effectively train without rolling partners. There might be a Jiu Jitsu club at your university that you can join. Having Jiu Jitsu friends that you can roll with outside of the gym can create innovation through a contextual variation.
9. Set goals – Having goals in life are conducive to having a higher purpose. Purpose is not a linear objective and it can’t be counterfeited. It can be said that Jiu Jitsu can be your life’s purpose or be synergistic to help you realize that purpose. This is part of why Jiu Jitsu is the most beautiful martial art of all.
10. Respect your body – This can take on many forms. Visit your doctor. Brush your teeth and floss. Recognize stress and take steps to counter-balance it. Remember to breathe deeply. Use mindfulness. Avoid processed foods and eat your vegetables. Drink plenty of water. Don’t drink to excess or use drugs often if at all. Consult with a counselor if you are having psychological symptoms such as grief or depression. Take care of your injuries.
