The Shot Heard ‘Round the World…
Can we just stop for a moment and say: ‘Holy Shit, That Knockout was Spectacular!’ Lawler got his jaw absolutely ROCKED by the fast, explosive power of Woodley’s fist in the very first round.

“I’m going to go out there and seize the moment” -Woodley
You can almost still all see it happening in slow motion, when you close your eyes… Woodley’s rush in and then feint with the left, quickly closing the gap between him and Lawler. As his fist flies forward, you can see Lawler flinching, clearly preparing for that soaring bomb which lands perfectly on the knockout button. His face reverberates with ripples like a meditative skin-pond that just got cannon-balled by Woodley’s fist-boulder. Of course, the crowd at UFC 201 loses their minds. The new Champ rushes over to the fence and shakes the cage like an enraged bear: the aftershocks of his absolutely explosive earthquake beatdown. After, he kneels with his head down on the canvas, a moment of silent reflection on the significance of the moment with seeming religious quietude. The World Stops. “The Chosen One” did it.
Woodley “Lawler’d” Robbie Lawler
Woodley’s knockout at 2 minutes and 12 seconds was the fastest in the Welterweight Division. In fact, Nick Diaz is the only other person to have ever knocked out Robbie Lawler. Robbie is a fighter’s fighter. You don’t get a nickname like “Ruthless” for nothing. His fight against Rory Macdonald is definitively one of the BEST fights that the UFC has ever seen: it was a Thunderdome inspired bloodsport that is rivaled in intensity only by matches such as Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva versus Mark “Super Samoan” Hunt the FIRST time that they rumbled in The Octagon when it went to decision.
Woodley and Lawler are teammates, both hailing from American Top Team, one of the best gyms in the world. Both fighters were virtually identical in their stats, both weighing in at 170 pounds and possessing a 34″ reach and 34 years of age. Lawler had two inches on Woodley, standing at 5’11”.
